Recent Rectal Cancer Diagnosis
I became aware I have stage 2 rectal cancer in March 2021. My indicators were bright red blood in my stool, which I had for 10 years. I originally went to see a doctor when this first occurred and was told it was probably microscopic hemorrhoids and for me to change my diet.
A small amount of blood continued and it became normal for me. Fast forward to February 2021, my bowel habits changed and I began to have bloody diarrhea. From that point I found a gastroenterology specialist to discuss my issues. They recommended a colonoscopy and other testing. The colonoscopy confirmed the cancer.
I am 46 years old and my oncologist stated that of all the people with rectal cancer only 5% are less than 50. I asked if there were some way I could have prevented this and he told me that me getting this before 50, there was nothing I could have done to prevent it. I was going to get it.
I have one last test to get, an MRI, and then my surgeon, oncologist, and radiation oncologist will determine my treatment.
