Breast Lift with lumpectomy? Yay or Nay?
After 6 rounds of chemo my cancer (Triple positive IDC with three affected lymph nodes) I am scheduling a lumpectomy. (Radiation to follow.) It is my choice if I want to do a Breast Lift at the same time as the lumpectomy, covered by insurance. I could certainly benefit from it and expect I would be happy with the results. But any extra surgery means extra risks which scares me.I am truly undecided.
Wondering if anyone could share their experiences. Are you are happy you did it? Wish you had not done it? Didn’t do it but wish you had? Didn’t do it and happy you didn’t?
I had lumpectomy in Feb 2017 then 33 rounds of radiation. I chose not to do any additional surgery and I am okay with that decision. I was 62 at that time and just didn’t want to go thru any additional surgery or downtime. Husband was okay with that decision and actually was very supportive of it.
I had a lumpectomy that took quite a bit of breast tissue and my nipple. At the same time I had a reduction of the other breast since the difference in size would be noticeable. The plastic surgeon said he would make the noncancerous breast smaller since radiation would further shrink the affected breast. After the surgery, the unaffected breast was noticeably larger than the other and after radiation of the cancerous breast even more noticeable. I had thick scars under the reduced breast that took two years to heal to the point that I could wear a bra. He also failed to tell me that I would lose sensation in the reduced breast. My breast surgeon kept commenting how “perky” my breasts were but the perkiness didn’t seem to compensate for the discomfort in my case. If I were you, I would find out how much extra cutting will be done and if the nerves will be impacted.
I had a lumpectomy and reduction at the same time March 2019. I’m 53 and have had vey large breasts my entire life. My plastic surgeon removed both nipples but only replaced the left one because the radiologist said the right one wouldn’t survive radiation. I can have a tattoo if I choose but it doesn’t bother me. It hasn’t been quite a year since the surgery and I have most of the feeling back in both breasts. I am so happy I had it done! I’ve never felt better. I wore a summer dress to a wedding last year that required a strapless bra but I didn’t even need one! I love my plastic surgeon. He is a genius!
I had a lumpectomy in December and had breast implants removed at the same time so a lift was necessary for me. I chose not to have my implants replaced as I was looking to get them removed anyway. I am very happy I chose to have a lift since I wasn’t sure what my breast tissue would look like after the surgery. I am triple positive as well and just had my 4th weekly taxol/Herceptin treatment. Will have 21 sessions of radiation after this is done and then continue with the Herceptin every 3 weeks for 9 mo and then hormone therapy will follow for 5 years. I was so happy with my plastic surgeon.
I also had a reduction at the same time that I had my lumpectomy. I still think it was the right decision, but I did need a follow-up surgery and, frankly, think I need another one because I am not happy with the outcome. I would be interested to know if any of you who were VERY happy with your plastic surgeons would be willing to share their names.
July 2018 I had lumpectomy with breast reduction. I had always been large-breasted so definitely needed one. I am 68 years and am very, very happy that I went with the reduction/lift. Dr. Theniussen, my plastic surgeon, did an excellent job. At a follow-up mammogram the Tech asked who my plastic surgeon was. She commented it was the best surgery she had seen in the 20 years she’s been performing mammograms.
I’ve had right lumpectomy with all the underarm lymph nodes removed. I have lymphedema issues and breast swelling issues. Beware of surgeries that remove lymph nodes. My right breast has swelling as well. It is significantly larger than my left breast. I started with large breasts 38DD that swelled to 38J during pregnancy. But even on anti hormone meds, the right side swelled when the left side shrunk. I’d beware that any surgery has side efffects to your lymph system.
